Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, Casa Farnsworth

Casa Farnsworth, è forse il più famoso progetto dell’architetto Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, costruita tra il 1945 ed il 1951 a Plano, a 90 chilometri a sud-ovest da Chicago.

E’ considerata uno dei simboli del Movimento Moderno, infatti nel 2006 è stato designato National Historic Landmark. 

La casa è di 140 mq in vetro ed acciaio bianco, elementi che creano una completa continuità verso l’esterno, a causa della sua soprelevazione di 1,5 mt dal suolo, sembra galleggiare senza peso sulla superficie che la ospita. La forma è rettangolare allineata al fiume Fox che scorre nelle immediate vicinanze, la scala infatti, posta ortogonalmente al fiume conduce ad esso. Mies applica il concetto di open space, un grande spazio non strutturato che si adatta alle esigenze di più persone, rinchiusa da una cortina di vetro e retta da un’esile apparato strutturale, prototipo della sua visione dell’architettura contemporanea. All’interno dell’abitazione si ha la sensazione di trovarsi nella natura, a causa delle pareti perimetrali in vetro, tuttavia questo rapporto con essa viene interrotto a causa delle linee rette e perfette, che nella natura non trovano alcun riscontro.

Farnsworth House, is perhaps the most famous project of Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, built between 1945 and 1951 in Plano, 90 miles southwest of Chicago.

It is considered one of the symbols of the Modern Movement, in fact, in 2006 it was designated as a National Historic Landmark.

The house is 140 square meters built of glass and white steel, elements that create a complete continuity to the outside. Because of its elevation of 1.5 m above the ground, seems to float weightless on the surface. The rectangular shape is aligned with the Fox River that flows nearby, the scale in fact, placed perpendicular to the river leading to it. Mies applies the concept of open space, a large space is not structured to fit the needs of more people, confined by a curtain of glass and supported by a slender structural system, a prototype of his vision of contemporary architecture. Inside the house there is a feeling of being in nature, because of the walls of glass, however, this relationship to it is interrupted because of the straight lines and perfect, which in nature are not reflected.
